Acupressure Treatments
Acupressure is an ancient Chinese healing technique practiced by Joan
Borden, MAc, Certified Acupuncturist, at the Manhattan Acupuncture Center in
Manhattan, New York which consists of applying pressure to certain meridian
points on the body to induce healing.
Acupressure is very different from Acupuncture in that acupressure is a
non-needle variation of acupuncture involving deep finger pressure on
acupoints (as opposed to needles) and is similar to Japanese shiatsu.
Acupressure is rooted in the principles of traditional Chinese medicine and
is used to release muscular tension, promote the circulation of blood and
restore the flow of qi (the body's vital energy) along channels in the body.
In many traditional Asian medical philosophies health is considered to be a
state of balance in the body maintained by the flow of life energy along
specific meridians. Disease is believed to occur when there is blockage in
the flow of energy or when energy flow is deficient or in excess creating
patterns of disharmony.
Acupressure aims to restore normal flow of energy by the method of finger
pressure, palm pressure, stretching, and other established acupressure techniques. As an
acupressure point is pressed tension is thought to surrender to the pressure allowing blood to
flow more freely and toxins to be released and eliminated.
Acupressure is effective in reducing anxiety, stress, and tension and other
ailments such as headaches and muscle aches, increasing circulation and
enabling the body to relax deeply. Ultimately by relieving stress the body's
immune system is strengthened.
Acupressure can:
* Relieve stress and tension
* Relax mind and body
* Increase blood circulation
* Aid in the removal of toxic wastes
* Provide relief from head, neck and shoulder aches
* Promote the healing of injuries
* Increase energy levels
* Increase overall feeling of well-being
